Devon Freewheelers are a team of volunteers who are dedicated to providing a 24hrs a day, 7 days a week service supporting the NHS in delivering essential blood supplies. The blood is used for transfusions and testing in addition they transport organs and human tissue samples for the purposes of transplant, medication direct to the patient at home in the case of urgent need and Donor Breast Milk (which also comes under the Human Tissue Act) to the Neonatal Intensive Care Units throughout Devon.
Occasionally the bike riders are obliged to go further afield to support the patients in the hours of crisis. More recently, they have started transporting life saving blood products direct to Air Ambulances. Devon Freewheelers carry out this vital service to the Devon Air Ambulance Trust and the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance Trust. Last year alone, DSAA saved over 30 lives with on scene blood transfusions.
St Bridget Nurseries will have collection tins at all their till points as well as raise money for the charity throughout the year at events. The money we raise will go towards maintaining the vehicles and keeping the Devon Freewheelers HQ and call centre open. In 2018 the centre handled 4035 jobs saving lives across the county.
