Propagation Skills Tour

On the Propagation Skills Tour you will be guided behind the scenes to our nursery propagation greenhouses In Old Rydon Lane. You will meet our propagation supervisors who have worked with us for 40 years each! With all that experience they’ve got a few tips to share and will show you how we grow plants from various types of cuttings, grafting, division and from seed. We will demonstrate techniques, answer questions as well as show you each stage and what propagation on a commercial scale looks like. See thousands of young plants in the greenhouses. The tour typically lasts 1-1.5 hours but can take longer if there are a lot of questions.

This event is in aid of our charity of the year, Children’s Hospice South West. Tickets cost £5pp with all money going to the charity.

Booking is essential as visitor numbers are restricted to give everyone the chance to see the demonstrations clearly. Tickets can be purchased from either of our garden centres or by calling 01392 876281 or you can reserve tickets online and pay for them on the day.

On the day please gather outside our plant information hut in the Old Rydon Lane garden centre planteria.

Plus we are offering a whopping 30% off aquariums, aquarium plants and tropical fish on both Saturday 8th AND Sunday 9th October. Our prices are already competitive but this makes them as cheap as chips!

The Aquarium Spectacular event is at our Sidmouth Road, Clyst St Mary garden centre only.

Go Wild in Your Garden this Half Term

Children, bring your grown ups along to one of our garden centres this half term (24-30 October) and take part in our wildlife treasure trail.

How to enter

We’ve hidden 14 different wildlife creature posters around our centre for you to find. Under 7 year olds have to find all the creatures and write down the number they find on each poster on their form. Then use the de-coder to change the numbers into letters and spell out the prize words!

Seven and overs will need to answer 16 questions (the answers to which can be found on the hidden posters) before de-coding and cracking there own prize winning words.

Every child who cracks the code wins a small prize.

While you are completing the trail everyone will learn lots of fun facts about garden wildlife and find out how easy it is to go wild in your garden this half term whether it be bat watching and opening a hedgehog cafe or putting up a nest box and making a ladybird house. Everyone can help wildlife in their garden no matter where or the size.

Dragonfly Dragonfly

Go Wild in Your Garden this half term.

This event is happening at both our garden centres:

St Bridget Nurseries, Old Rydon Lane, Exeter, EX2 7JY

AND St Bridget Nurseries, Sidmouth Road, Clyst St Mary, Exeter, EX5 1AE

View hundreds of ornamental, native & fruit trees growing in our field on our unique nursery tree field tour. Learn how we propagate trees and what horticultural terms mean for you, such as rootstocks, pollination groups & tree shapes.

At the end of the talk, you will be free to wander the field and order trees.

Nursery Propagation Tour – book now

Come behind the scenes on to our nursery in Old Rydon Lane. We grow over 90% of the plants we sell and are fairly unique in the wide range of plants we grow. We propagate most of the plants ourselves using traditional techniques like seed sowing, cuttings, division and forms of grafting. The nursery propagation tour is a chance to see most of these techniques in practice.

What you will see and learn

Upon arrival we will gather outside the plant information hut in the Old Rydon Lane garden centre. You will then be guided into our two large nursery glasshouses. We will begin the tour by talking about the seasonal bedding and vegetable plants we grow. You will be shown the many different sizes of seed we use as well as plug plants from royalty protected varieties. We will give some seed sowing demonstrations and then let you see the thousands of plants growing in the glasshouse before moving on to our “mist benches”. Here you will see young cuttings. find out what media we use to propagate different varieties of plants and see how quickly a cutting develops roots. We will then sit down for a cutting demonstration covering a variety of techniques that you can take home and try yourself. Finally we will walk you through the greenhouse where all our shrubs begin life seeing the various stages of growth.

The nursery propagation tour typically lasts 2 hours including time for questions and answers. It is undercover and fairly flat. We provide seating for most of the talk/demo. Ticket numbers are limited so everyone can see and hear. Booking is essential.

All money goes to Devon Air Ambulance Trust, our chosen charity of the year 2017.
